The earliest records of Darien's settlement date back to the seventeenth century, although the modern incarnation and its official name were established later, in 1820. The name was allegedly settled on by a traveling sailor and referenced the Isthmus of Darien, which covers a small coastal area between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Darien was a rural farming community with a relatively small population-focused around Rings End Landing- a shipping port and hub for much of its life. It was not until after the Civil War that Fairfield County became a coveted destination for New York City's wealthy elite. The consistent investment and building of holiday homes in Darien saw it grow into the heart of the Gold Coast it is today. The town is broken into several neighborhoods with areas of Noroton, and its views over Manhattan are generally considered the most desirable.
- Its stunning period architectures very much characterize the distinguished area. The Frederick J. Smith House was created in the mid-twentieth century by avant-garde architect Richard Meier. The sweeping geometric shapes and glasswork in the Smith House have led to it being considered one of the finest examples of Meier’s early work. - The Mather Homestead is a public museum, exhibition, and historical site for visitors to Darien County. The house was built in 1778 and is considered a fantastic example of period architecture.
