Darien is a waterfront town along the prestigious Gold Coast of Fairfield County, Connecticut. The Gold Coast is so-named due to the high number of affluent families and individuals that take up residence in this short stretch of coastline just North-East of New York City. The region has been the subject of many movies and books that depict the lives of wealthy or high-powered individuals in the roles of finance, hedge fund management, and technology. Notable films include The Stepford Wives and The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. Darien has been the wealthiest town in the United States for the past two years. Proximity to the New Haven railroad commuter line allows quick access into Manhattan and connections to international airports. The town is home to two public beaches, eleven parks, numerous exclusive country clubs, golf courses, boat and yacht clubs. The weather is very similar to neighboring New York, with freezing conditions during the winter but mild, amiable springs and summers.

The earliest records of Darien's settlement date back to the seventeenth century, although the modern incarnation and its official name were established later, in 1820. The name was allegedly settled on by a traveling sailor and referenced the Isthmus of Darien, which covers a small coastal area between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Darien was a rural farming community with a relatively small population-focused around Rings End Landing- a shipping port and hub for much of its life. It was not until after the Civil War that Fairfield County became a coveted destination for New York City's wealthy elite. The consistent investment and building of holiday homes in Darien saw it grow into the heart of the Gold Coast it is today. The town is broken into several neighborhoods with areas of Noroton, and its views over Manhattan are generally considered the most desirable.

  • Its stunning period architectures very much characterize the distinguished area. The Frederick J. Smith House was created in the mid-twentieth century by avant-garde architect Richard Meier. The sweeping geometric shapes and glasswork in the Smith House have led to it being considered one of the finest examples of Meier’s early work. The property has won several awards for architecture and sits on Shennamer Road overlooking Long Island Sound.
  • The Mather Homestead is a public museum, exhibition, and historical site for visitors to Darien County. The house was built in 1778 and is considered a fantastic example of period architecture. The homestead was passed onto the Mather Homestead Foundation, a non-profit organization, in 2017. The organization runs several events throughout the year, including a Colonial Christmas event in December and Classical Music concerts.
  • The Darien Public Schools organization runs high schools in the area, which are frequently rated among the country's top fifty. The district school system is also one of the USA's wealthiest and oversees five schools in the local area. In particular, Darien has received international recognition for its STEM high schools, with many leading scientists beginning their education in Fairfield C
